Yesterday

October 11, 2026

Just yesterday this aunt (she seems to pop by every year) came and squeezed my cheeks, and told me “how you’ve grown!”

Just yesterday my will, wordless and reptilian, sent me climbing onto my lunch box to see ahead, out the bus window.

It was just yesterday that older girl made fun of me (I did not like her), and the world ended. She was just tasting power.

And yesterday that other girl (I did like her very much) kissed me on the cheek, and my whole defenseless body went off like popping candy on the tongue. The world was back in place.

And today, just today, I saw a boy (he was just a little package the other day) and thought to myself “how much he’s grown!”
